Another reason to be thankful

November 26th, 2004

I received the following email from my friend who had breast cancer surgery on Tuesday.

I have good news! I’m out of surgery and the initial results were better than I ever anticipated. I had a lumpectomy and the margins were clean on the first cut and there was so sign of lymphatic invasion – which means that the whole thing must have been caught early and there’s no fear that it has spread to any other place in my body. I don’t know how much you know about the process, but they inject this blue liquid, which shows them which lymph nodes the cancer would have gone to first and then they test those nodes.

Those are the initial results, mind you. This week they will be doing a more intensive study to be sure – but I am thrilled and hopeful.

Plus, let me just say that outside of some steristrips and a scar – you can’t even tell I’ve had breast surgery. Amazing. No matter what the final results show, I’ll still be doing radiation and some sort of chemo I’m sure, but I’m really praying that it’s a much better scenario and perhaps a lighter load of treatment.

Everyone kept telling me that I needed to rest after surgery, but I haven’t been able to. I just feel so lucky, so blessed, and so happy, as I’ve honestly just been trying to prepare myself for the worst.

I hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving and appreciate so much that your checking in with me. I can’t tell how much it means to know that people care about this. It’s been an incredible month. I don’t think I’ll ever be the same.
