Breaking the rules

August 5th, 2005

If you know me, you know I am the ultimate “rule girl”. I don’t like breaking the rules. Walking across the street when it says DON’T WALK, that’s out. Walking into a neighbor’s new construction project when no one is there, just to “check it out”, is totally out.

I like playing by the rules. I’m comfortable that way.

But, the damn public library has forced me to go against all that feels comfortable to me. And honestly, if this is the start of my downfall, the whole internet will know who is to blame. THE LIBRARY.

I am reading Autobiography of a Face by Lucy Grealy and I went online to renew it. The two weeks I had it checked-out just has not been enough time. Once online, I was told that I can’t check it out again because there is a waiting list.

After my rage subsided, I set the book on the counter top to take back to the library in the morning. I realized I may never finish the book. I am not going to get back on the waiting list, I have already waited. I am not going to buy it, I’m almost done. I will just take it back and try to picture my own ending.

When I awoke in the morning I had a realization. I can keep the book. I can keep it past the due date and finish it. Yes, I said PAST THE DUE DATE. I know, it gives me the chills too, so against the rules.

I may have to pay 30 cents to those bastards, but I will keep it past what my little white ticket says I can, and I will feel good about it!
