There is such a thing as a stupid question

August 18th, 2005

We went to KP’s 15 month check-up to make sure he wasn’t stunted from living with us. We came to find out; he is a normal 15 month old…with the exception of his head size, 80%. Which is actually smaller than his brother’s that measures in at a whooping 95%, and mind you, does have its own solar system.

We (the pediatrician and I) started talking about allergy medications. PJ has taken to having some good sized bags under her eyes, which are a-typical for her. She checked her out and thought it could be due to all the allergens in the air and suggested some allergy medicine.

The pediatrician gave us the ok sign and was gathering her things up when I said, “Before you go, and as long as we are on the subject of medications…we are going on a 12 hour car trip to Indiana for a family reunion in a few weeks. Can I give the kids some Dramamine for the car ride? Is that ok?”

She stood stock still, tilted her chin down to her chest, cocked her head slightly to the right, looked out at me as if looking over a fake pair of bifocals and said, “Are you REALLY asking me if it is ok to sedate your children?”

With that stare and those words I now know that our pediatrician (whom I love and admire) now thinks I am a complete JACKASS!
